PART 4 ADDITIONAL SKILLS FOR PROMOTING CHANGE We believe that by applying the micro-skills and approaches highlighted in the previous sections an effective counselling relationship can be formed and maintained. However, once these foundational skills have been learnt, counsellors can move on to develop additional skills. Indeed, counselling is a continual processing of learning and developing! In this part we introduce the skills of: normalising, using the ‘here and now’ experience, confrontation, challenging self-destructive beliefs, externalising, solution-focused skills, exploring polarities, re framing, making decisions, facilitating action, experiential counselling and relaxation.
